Consumer health data privacy policy
This policy is separate from our [privacy notice](/privacy) and covers only health-related data. It is written for the laws of Washington, Nevada and Connecticut, and applies to everyone.
The consumer health data we collect, and why
- Apple Health summaries — sleep, steps and active energy, only if you connect Apple Health on your iPhone. Used to fit Margo’s advice to how you slept and moved. They stay on your iPhone; a short summary goes to Margo’s AI service only if you separately agree to that.
- Health details you choose to share in “About you” (for example a condition you want Margo to respect). Used in Margo’s advice, only with your explicit consent.
- What you tell Margo in conversations, journal entries and notes that relates to your health or wellbeing, and what Margo’s AI infers from it (for example that you sleep badly before deadlines). Used to coach you.
- A crisis signal: whether something you wrote matches Margo’s list of phrases about suicide or self-harm. Used only to show you crisis lines and, if you chose one, to email your trusted contact (safety protocol). We keep only daily counts, with no account and no words.
- Location: Margo’s Places feature never records visits at health-care places and never sets a geofence around one, so it does not collect data about seeking health care. Coordinates stay on your iPhone.
We do not sell consumer health data, use it for advertising, or use it to train AI models.
Where it comes from
From you (what you type or say, and what you choose to share); from Apple Health on your iPhone, if you connect it; and from Margo’s AI, which draws inferences from what you tell it.
Who receives it
- Processors acting only on our instructions: Anthropic (Margo’s AI, when health data is part of what you ask about and you consented where consent is required), Hetzner (the server that holds your Margo Account), Cloudflare (network and AI service), ElevenLabs or OpenAI (only the text of an answer Margo speaks aloud), Google Workspace (the email to your trusted contact, which contains no health details beyond that you may need support).
- Your trusted contact, only if you named one, they accepted, and Margo believes you may be at serious risk of harming yourself — one email, with nothing you wrote.
- Nobody else, except where the law requires it.
Your consent
We collect consumer health data only with your consent or as necessary to provide the coaching you ask for, and we ask separately before sharing it: connecting Apple Health, letting its summaries reach Margo’s AI, sharing health details in “About you”, and naming a trusted contact are each a separate choice that you can withdraw in Margo’s settings at any time.
Your rights
- Confirm whether we collect, share or sell your consumer health data, and get a copy, including the list of everyone we shared it with.
- Withdraw your consent at any time.
- Have your consumer health data deleted — from our systems and from our processors.
- Appeal if we refuse a request: reply to our answer with “appeal”, and we will decide within 45 days; if you are in Washington you may then contact the Washington Attorney General.
Use the data requests page or write to help@margo.global. We answer within 45 days and do not charge for it. We confirm your identity by email first.
Changes
If we change what we do with consumer health data, we update this page first, and we ask for your consent again before any new collection or sharing that needs it.
